The History of Grace Lutheran Church

Picture
Although these words were written by Clara Thompson Holm, the same feelings were prevalent among all of those who first belonged to Deer Creek Lutheran Church. And, one hundred years later, the same feelings persist as people attend Grace Free Lutheran Church, whose congregation evolved from the first group of pioneers in 1879.
It was a committee representing the community who met that April day in 1879. The year before, nearly all these pioneers had settled in the locality. After establishing their homes, one other first thoughts was to organize a congregation. The committee attended services at the home of Hohannes Trygstad at Medary, where Rev O.O. Sand conducted services. At this time Deer Creek Congregation was organized. The first series were usually held there.

Bruce is a small community with a population of 204 as of the 2010 Census. We are located 14 miles Northwest of Brookings, 10 miles south of Estelline, 6 miles from Oakwood State Park, and 5 miles West of I-29. We may be a small town but proud of our roots. Bruce has a beautiful Ball Park with a Kids' Park across from it.  www.cityofbruce.net
